John Figg
The documentation acquired with the resource pack shows that it was developed by John Figg MA. His handwritten notes show that he was the Director of this project.
From various web searches it has been possible to establish that John Figg was born in March 1929.
He was an education academic at St Luke’s College, but it has not been possible to establish when he was appointed there or what his exact role/position was. His handwritten notes have a rubber stamp at the top, of the Religious Studies Department, so it is likely he was part of this department. This could also explain why he chose to produce a resource about the Cathedral.
A property article of 5th November 1995 in The Independent newspaper indicates that he ceased working at St Luke’s in 1977, when he and his family moved to Hersden, Kent (https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/property-bargains-that-come-of-blight-1580597.html – accessed 14.5.2025 - printed version of this article and more details about where the family lived in Exeter and Kent are with the resource pack in the Exeter Cathedral Archive).
St Luke’s College became part of the University of Exeter in 1978. Several academic staff left the College at this time because of the merger. Perhaps this was the reason John Figg left.
Information in the online records of Companies House suggests the family ran a nursery business at Westbere Court until August 2015, but John seems to have continued his interest in education and was clearly and rightly very proud of his Exeter School Resource Pack, as there is a letter in the box from his now nearby Canterbury Cathedral, dated 1992, which indicates he had approached that cathedral to see if they would like a similar pack to be produced. This is the only information about this venture; it is not known if a similar education pack resulted.
