Exeter Cathedral School - Opening of the New Science Block

Exeter Cathedral School - new science block 1968

A new Science Block for the Cathedral School was opened in 1968. This was situated on the northern side of the western end of Kalendarhay, in an area that used to be occupied by a printers. At this stage, St Mary Major church stood to the east, but was to be demolished in 1971.

An article about the opening of the science block was published in a local newspaper. The actual paper is uncertain, but was presumably Exeter's Express and Echo, since the envelope associated with the photographs and franked 4th November 1968, says The Western Times Co. Ltd, Sidwell House, Exeter, which were the premises of the Express and Echo from 1958 until they moved to Sowton trading estate in 1992.

The photo of the outside of the science block is marked 'proof. It measures a mere 57 x 57 mm (old-style 2.25 inch format).

The photograph of the inside of the science room is a full-size, 166 x 215 mm (6.5 x 8.5 inches). It curiously has a hand-written note on its rear: 'Touch in doors & windows (?) & corner angle'.
