Cricket at Wonford House

Photograph published in the Express and Echo, 1952.

Caption reads: "Friendly Foes have a chat. - Picture taken at the cricket match at Wonford House, yesterday, between the Exeter Clergy and the Cathedral Choristers, showing the Dean (the Very Rev. A.R. Wallace) with some of the boys.

Tall chorister on the left is John Greenaway. Boy with glasses is James Stewart (or Stuart?) Douglas, a very fine treble and a very ham actor. Can any other old choristers remember his version of 'Shivering Shocks', or 'The Hiding Place' performed in the chapter house in (probably) 1953 (information from Richard Salter, treble 1952-57; died February 2009).

The area long-used for games by the Cathedral School was where the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital has been since 1974. The Wonford House referred to is the old house on the site, now used for mental health care.

With thanks to Simon Farrow (treble 1949-1953) for the photograph and names.
