Probably 1953, close to November 11th

Consecration of the Field of Remembrance

In the Close, just in front of the Royal Clarence Hotel, by Dean Wallace.

This annual ceremony took place until the mid-2010s, usually on a Saturday morning. It ceased being sang by the cathedral choir when Saturday morning rehearsals stopped in about 2014. Some choral scholars and other singers continued to provide the music for this ceremony for a few years after that. It did not take place in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic that year.

On the extreme left is Bishop Surtees of Crediton. Just right of him is Rev. Howard Treneer, the Headmaster, known affectionately as Patron (pronounced with the pat rhyming with mat). Mrs. Treneer (not in this picture) was known appropriately as Matron (same pronunciation). The Succentor, is just to the right of the Dean. The gentleman to the right of him (with glasses) is Mr. Isaacs, who sang tenor.

The 1958 ceremony can also be seen.

With thanks to Simon Farrow (treble 1949-1953) for this photograph and the details of names.
